Timed lessons and checkpoints record your seat time so the hours hold up to an audit.

  3. Step 3

    Download your certificate instantly

Your certificate lists the approved hours and completion date the moment you pass.

  4. Step 4

    Send your certificate, then renew

Oregon Construction Contractors Board accepts completion reports from providers, but not every provider sends them, so do not rely on one. Email your certificate of completion to cecerts@ccb.oregon.gov with your CCB license number in the subject line. The CCB will not renew a residential license until it has proof of your continuing education. Then renew every 2 years.

Oregon Contractor Continuing Education Guide

Oregon residential contractors renew their CCB license every two years, and the Construction Contractors Board will not renew it until your continuing education is on file. Here is how the Oregon contractor CE requirement works, which hours you owe, and how to get your certificates to the CCB.

Who Must Complete Oregon CCB Continuing Education

Every residential contractor licensed by the Oregon CCB completes continuing education each two-year license period unless their license type is exempt. A contractor endorsed for both residential and commercial work meets the commercial continuing education program instead.

Three specialty (limited) licenses are exempt from CCB continuing education:

  • Home services contractors
  • Residential locksmith services contractors
  • Home energy performance score contractors

How Many Hours: Licensed Under or Over Six Years

Every Oregon residential contractor takes 3 hours of CCB laws, regulations and business practices. The CCB teaches that course itself, as a live 3-hour class (webinars included) or as three one-hour classes in your CCB online services account.

The rest of your hours come from approved courses in the CCB course catalog: 5 hours if you have held your CCB license for six years or more (8 hours in all), or 13 hours if you have held it for less than six years (16 hours in all). Our CCB-approved courses cover those 5 or 13 hours online.

Getting Your Hours to the CCB

Some providers report completions to the CCB and some do not, so the CCB asks contractors to send their certificates themselves. Email your certificate of completion to cecerts@ccb.oregon.gov with your CCB license number on the certificate or in the email. You can send it as soon as you finish a course or closer to renewal.

Your TradesCE certificate shows our CCB provider number and the course number, and it stays in your account so you can download it again at any time.

Oregon CE Audits and Your Records

Each month the CCB randomly selects a share of recently renewed contractors for a continuing education audit covering the previous two-year licensing cycle. Keep every certificate of completion until the audit window for that cycle has passed.

“On the first of every month, a portion of recently renewed contractors are randomly selected for continuing education audit.”

How to Renew Your Oregon Residential Contractor License

Who has to renew

Oregon residential contractors holding a Residential contractor license renew with Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB). Hours differ by license — 16 hours for Residential contractor licensed by the CCB for less than six years; 8 hours for Residential contractor licensed by the CCB for six or more years.

When to renew

Oregon residential contractors licenses renew every 2 years, on the schedule your board assigns to your license. Continuing education must be complete before you submit the renewal. (OR GC (CCB): biennial on licensee anniversary; residential CE 16 hrs must be on file before renewal - per-licensee)

Step by step

  1. 1

Confirm your license class and renewal date

Oregon sets residential contractors requirements by license class (Residential contractor). Check the class printed on your license, then note your renewal date — renewals run the schedule your board assigns to your license.

  2. 2

Complete 8 to 16 hours of board-approved continuing education

Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB) requires 8 to 16 hours every 2 years (16 hours if licensed by the CCB for less than six years; 8 hours if licensed by the CCB for six or more years), including Other approved courses. That total includes 3 hours of CCB laws, regulations and business practices, taught only by Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB); take it from the board, because no provider's course includes it. Do not leave it for the last week — completions must be on file before the deadline.

  3. 3

    Save your certificate of completion

Download the certificate the moment you finish and keep it with your license records.

  4. 4

Make sure your hours reach the CCB

In Oregon, Oregon Construction Contractors Board accepts completion reports from providers, but not every provider sends them, so do not rely on one. Email your certificate of completion to cecerts@ccb.oregon.gov with your CCB license number in the subject line. The CCB will not renew a residential license until it has proof of your continuing education.

  5. 5

    Renew with the CCB

Submit your renewal and pay the renewal fee before the deadline. A late renewal usually means a late fee, and a lapsed license can mean re-applying from scratch.

Founder of At Your Pace Online; contractor course instructor since 2011

Michael Melvin is a construction educator and former contractor who built one of the most widely used online training platforms for licensed tradespeople in the United States. As founder and former CEO of At Your Pace Online, he led the company from its early years in Oregon through its growth into a national provider of state-approved pre-licensing and continuing education. Under his leadership, AYPO became a trusted source for contractor, electrician, plumber, HVAC, real estate, and insurance training across all 50 states. In 2021 the company was acquired by American Safety Council.

Melvin’s teaching is grounded in field experience. He previously worked as a general contractor in Oregon, then used that practical knowledge to design courses that contractors could actually use—licensing requirements, business practices, and job-site realities rather than theory alone. Through At Your Pace Online and related programs, he has trained thousands of general contractors nationwide. Today he is known as an instructor who speaks the language of the trade: someone who has run jobs, built a training company, and spent years helping contractors get licensed, stay compliant, and run stronger businesses.
